E74 Wins

It is with a heavy heart that I report that my Xbox 360 has finally lost its long battle against the dreaded E74. Upon firing it up to play L.A. Noire earlier this week it once again retreated behind its horrible red ring. So, as a prerequisite to cracking cases and sleuthing evidence, I had to drop $450 on a new 360. At least it came pre-packed with a 250 GB HDD.

It also came with this Kinect thing. I have no idea what to do with this.

I’m confident that I could crack the old 360 open and get it limping again, but man, going through that whole song and dance every time a new 360 game comes out just isn’t going to cut the mustard. On the other hand, I could have simply bought a copy of L.A. Noire on PS3 and saved myself $400. That would have been a great piece of advice for someone to give me last week.

With L.A. Noire behind me, I went ahead and put the new box through its paces by re-acquainting myself with some old XBLA games I had laying around. (Okay, okay, I was actually just making sure the HDD transfer went off without a hitch. Licenses in tact, games loaded fine. We’re good to go.) That means I accomplished two things today:

1) I played this Xbox Indie Game called Laser Cat. It is a dollar, and it will take you about an hour to complete. It’s very similar in scope and fun-value to VVVVVV, which cost fifteen times as much. Actually I downloaded a ton of XIG games, just to see what was out there; it’s been a long time since I went slumming in that part of the store. Laser Cat was the only thing I shelled out a buck for, but just wading through a few dozen demos is a great way to kill an afternoon. Next time you’re between games, I recommend giving it a shot.

2) I did some test recordings for Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Finding a night to get enough guys together to get this recorded is going to be challenging — especially considering how hilariously out of practice we’ll all be — but I think it’ll be worth it. Here’s hoping.

I am so up for some C:HoD action some night! Not that I have a max-equipment character yet, I just purchased it, but I want someone to play with!

Stop trying to do it yourself. The 21st Century is all about paying “professionals” ungodly amounts of money to do things you could have done if the manufacturer hadn’t made their product so that you required said “professionals” to fix any “un”anticipated problems.

I would be 100% up for some late-night Castlevania actionings, keeping in mind that none of my characters are maxed out with goodies. They make up for it with sheer chutzpah, and an inability to spell chutzpah.

I don’t think anyone not named Eirikr has maxed out characters. 😛 Anyway, I’m still down for some Castlevania times. I’ve got some pretty beefed out characters, but most of my focus was on Jonathan and Richter. I also got a decent Soma, and I think with a little practice I can probably start doing the Puppetmaster soul shortcut glitch in the retro CV stage again.

Is the Laser Cat game of any relation to those SNL Laser Cats sketches? Do you have a guy fire lasers with a cat and have his partner die in the end?
