Minecraft

So I’ve spent about 90% of my free time this weekend playing around with Minecraft:

The free version of this game is about building things with colorful blocks. I don’t really need to go into detail explaining it; you can try it for yourself: www.minecraft.net.

It only took me a few minutes to get hopelessly addicted to this little toy. I spent hours last night carving a labyrinth of tunnels through a mountainside, bottoming out in a huge crystal dome over a lake of lava. It was pretty impressive, but of course I can’t save my worlds until my purchase of the full game goes through, so I had to whip up that chessboard for this blog post instead.

There’s an adventure game attached, but again, that’s going to have to wait until my purchase goes through. It’s ten euros, which works out to about fourteen bucks. I won’t know if the price was worth it until my PayPal check clears.

In the meantime, just typing “Minecraft” into a YouTube search turns up a wealth of great videos, from breathtakingly impressive feats of construction, to time lapses of multiplayer mayhem, to hilariously industrious griefing tutorials.

There’s a lot to love about Minecraft even just in the free browser version. I shudder to think of how much of my time will evaporate once I gain the ability to build roller coasters and elaborate lava traps.

  • I’ve been toying with this game since it’s announcement and Beta. Glad to see others starting to take notice and enjoy it as well, the game is really worth the money!

Good lord, I wasted way too much time on this thing last night. THANKS, BRICK.

I’ve spent way too much of my free time these past two weeks just playing minecraft. Creative is great, but once you start playing the alpha version with the new physics and items you really get sucked in. I’ve think I’ve wasted six hours just experimenting with different designs for launching TNT out of a makeshift cannon. On the other hand though, right now the alpha multiplayer is basically just a lame version of Creative mode where you have to grind for you building materials, but it’s going to be great once all the actual features that sets the alpha survival mode apart are actually implemented into the multiplayer. I’ve got some mean traps and castle defenses planned out.
